A family bike ride sounds like a shared activity. In practice, it involves four different opinions about the pace and at least one person asking where the next bakery is.

We followed winding roads, took the long way through a village, and stopped every time the hills looked especially green. The boys collected imaginary sprint points. The adults collected reasons to pause for coffee.

By the final stretch, the headwind had become everyone's common enemy. We rode together, laughed about our optimistic distance estimate, and called it a very good day out.
